BEST PRACTICE I

Title:
Imparting Journalistic skills to students.

Objectives:

  • To sensitize students on social issues around them
  • To impart writing skills
  • Firsthand experience of learning

Context:

Students found to be indifferent and insensitive towards the societal issues and malaises.
The Practice:
The students take up a social issue and make a study of the topic. Students make their own observations and come up with views, insights and opinions. Students render their observations, findings and suggestions and remedies in the form of an article. All the students’ articles are evaluated and finally best two out of them are selected.
Evidence of Success:
This practice motivated the students towards social volunteering. Students found to have developed participative spirit and have tended to become inquisitive about the happenings around them and react as well as a responsible citizen of the country.

Problems Encountered and Resources Required:

Students were initially found to be lacking writing skills and unable to create subjective view of the observations made. The department however, trained them and provided guidance on basics of journalistic reporting. The existing problems in the neighborhood were used as a subject for study and reporting.

Best Practice II

Title:
Comparative study of Governments functioning across the globe.

Objectives:

  • To inculcate analytical thinking among students.
  • To widen the students view of the subject.
  • To impart judging skills to students.

Context:
To make the teaching learning process more interactive, experimental and interactive.
Practice:
Students make a primary study of existing forms of the governments across the globe. The functioning of these governments is studied by comparing one with the other and the merits and demerits are explored. Students make a list of their own observations and present them in a structured format in the form of a report. The same is deliberated by the student in the classroom. The report is subject to evaluation by the mentor.
Evidence of success:
The students gained knowledge of the functioning of various forms of governments. The knowledge gained through comparative approach is retained by the student as compared to the conventional teaching methods.

Problems Encountered and Resources Required:

Some students found to be slow in learning. However, the department took remedial classes to bridge the gap among students and make them enthusiastic towards learning. Various state and central government text books and other books were used as teaching/learning resources. Internet resources were also used as a source of information for implementing the practice.
